I was thrilled to have recently receive this private email (abridged) from the very charming Chief Justice of Fiji, Anthony Gates, about my book ‘Redeeming Moti’.
Dear Dr Merrell,
I have been meaning to drop you a line. I read the book straight after your book launch here in Suva. I read it over 2 days.
It was a very brave book. It was clear, simple, and shocking. It told of a very bad chapter in the annals of the Australian Foreign Service. Everybody behaved badly, really badly. Politics invaded the Civil Service and all other arms of government. It was a Dreyfus case. Childish skulduggery. And your own life with its ups and downs laid bare, never mind grappling with Julian’s!
Many respectable people in academe will not want to touch it, nor lawyers. The story of the big state trampling all over you. Who are true friends of Julian, I wonder? Or should I say “Where?” The media were a disgrace.
It is a book that you should feel proud to have written>
Warm regards
Anthony Gates
Susan, I haven’t read your book yet. But I too am thrilled that the Chief Justice has taken time out to write to you to thank you for your book. Bringing forward a Dreyfus Case in the Pacific? That then is a must read for all of us who live in the Pacific (and in Australia) and are interested in what goes on right under our closed wide open eyes. More anon.
