During APEC, it seems a no-brainer that someone should have organised drag races down the length of Independence Boulevarde as entertainment . They had the racing cars (Maseratis) and the track. Why didn’t the APEC committee think of that? Absolutely no imagination? More money than sense (leaving the Maseratis idle)? What?
I mean, there would have been a birds’ eye view from up there at APEC House for the VIPs and the splendid sidewalks would have made good viewing platforms for the pubic too.
The only problem would have been that Independence Boulevarde’ (built by the Chinese at great expense) leads nowhere. It’s not a circuit and it’s variously reported as being either one kilometre long or 300 metres (more or less the same) – with six lanes.
At 300 KPH – this road would take the Maserati only 3.5 seconds to travel its distance, or, at one kilometre, it would take about 11 seconds. Not much of a spectacle (although it would be exciting watching the cars run out of road and screech to a halt before they disappeared down a pothole, wouldn’t it?)
But let’s not dwell on the negative (I’m embracing toxic positivity):
Port Moresby could have held the Inaugural Port Moresby, Maserati, Independence 300. And why stop at APEC? It could become an annual fixture of national life- like the Monte Carlo Rally did in Monaco – it’s not too late. The Maserati’s don’t seem to be going anywhere.
